New study on arms control in Europe

09.12.2011

The Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation published a new study written by five IFSH members about “Prospects for Arms Control in Europe”. The report, written by Michael Brzoska, Anne Finger, Oliver Meier, Götz Neuneck and Wolfgang Zellner describes the complex linkages between conventional and nuclear disarmament, as well as missile defences. The authors describe how the conflicting interests of NATO and Russia prevent a more cooperative relationship between the two sides. The study describes four possible strategies to revitalize arms control, which could use the connections between conventional and nuclear disarmament in a constructive manner. Specific proposals range from confidence-building measures to the elimination of certain weapon systems.
