Research for Peace and Security
The Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy at the University of Hamburg has been investigating the conditions for peace and security – on a global, regional and local scale – since 1971. The IFSH aims to contribute actively to peace by conducting outstanding and innovative research. Transferring knowledge from research to politics and society is a fundamental part of the institute's work.
We currently employ around 70 colleagues in research, transfer, teaching and administration at our locations in Hamburg and Berlin. Thanks to funding from the City of Hamburg, we are expanding our science and service teams significantly as part of a growth strategy for the coming years. The IFSH is an international and diverse institution. We combine a culture of openness, agility and short communication channels with the reputation of an established and well-connected research institution.
IFSH is seeking an engaged leadership personality with cross-media skills as Head of Communications (m/f/d).. The position is classified at EG 14 under TV-AVH, the duty station is Hamburg, and the intended start date is as soon as possible.
Your mission
You will be responsible for the institute's strategic public image, positioning our research nationally and internationally, advising and supporting researchers in their outreach activities, and highlighting the societal relevance of our research through a variety of knowledge transfer formats. As Head of Communications, you will lead a committed team and continuously develop the institute's communication strategy. You will also serve as the IFSH's press spokesperson and work closely with the institute's management, to whom you will report directly.
- Management and strategic development of communications at the IFSH
- Implementation of an integrated communication strategy
- Positioning of the institute in politics, media, science and society
- Responsibility for press and public relations
- Conception and support of target group-appropriate formats for knowledge transfer and science communication
- Leadership and further development of the communications team (editorial staff, event management)
- Development and maintenance of national and international networks in the field of communication and knowledge transfer, including at the federal political level in Berlin.
- Management of budget, resources and external collaborations
- Editorial responsibility for the company's central publications
- Advising the institute management on matters of profiling and reputation
Your profile
- Completed academic degree (Master’sdegree or equivalent).
- Several years of management experience in communications departments or press offices, ideally in a research or university context.
- Demonstrable success in the development and implementation of communication strategies at the organizational or institutional level
- Confident handling of press requirements and public relations in science and politics
- Extensive experience in handling multimedia formats such as video clips or podcasts and their use in digital communication channels.
- High level of linguistic expressiveness in German and English
- Strong leadership skills, organizational talent and team orientation
- High interest in peace and security policy issues
