Research for Peace and Security
The Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy at the University of Hamburg has been investigating the conditions for peace and security – on a global, regional and local scale – since 1971. The IFSH aims to contribute actively to peace by conducting outstanding and innovative research. Transferring knowledge from research to politics and society is a fundamental part of the institute's work. We currently employ around 70 colleagues in research, transfer, teaching and administration at our locations in Hamburg and Berlin. Thanks to funding from the City of Hamburg, we are significantly expanding our research and service teams as part of a growth strategy for the coming years. The IFSH is an international and diverse institution. We combine a culture of openness, agility and short communication channels with the reputation of an established and well-connected research institution.

Our institute consists of a group of over 70 individuals with a wide range of qualifications and very different backgrounds. What unites us is our passion for our topics. Our internal culture is one of growing cooperation. Promoting this is my personal motivation.

I am a personal example of the career path at IFSH: from MPS student to doctoral training and my first research project to my current leadership position, I have gone through all the stages at IFSH. So I am made@IFSH – and I have no regrets.
We who work in the administration of a research institution have very special jobs. We are an important part of the scientific process. Through our commitment, we create the conditions that enable science to contribute to peace and security. This responsibility motivates me every day.
Peace and security are mutually dependent and must be viewed from an interdisciplinary perspective. Engaging in academic diversity and exchange with the scientific community, civil society, and the executive and legislative branches is a privilege of working at the IFSH, one that I appreciate every day.
The quality of life in the city of Hamburg, with its maritime flair, is unrivalled thanks to its socio-cultural diversity and the inclusive power that comes with it. To be fair, the weather is very changeable, but that's part of its charm. Our modern infrastructure within historic walls offers excellent working conditions. With our office in Berlin, we are also represented in another big German city. We don't want to brag, but the support that our administration provides to all team members is absolutely outstanding. And we are always happy to welcome new faces.
