Research for Peace and Security
The Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy at the University of Hamburg has been investigating the conditions for peace and security – on a global, regional and local scale – since 1971. The IFSH aims to contribute actively to peace by conducting outstanding and innovative research. Transferring knowledge from research to politics and society is a fundamental part of the institute's work.
We currently employ around 70 colleagues in research, transfer, teaching and administration at our locations in Hamburg and Berlin. Thanks to funding from the City of Hamburg, we are expanding our science and service teams significantly as part of a growth strategy for the coming years. The IFSH is an international and diverse institution. We combine a culture of openness, agility and short communication channels with the reputation of an established and well-connected research institution.
We are looking for a structured and strong-communicating professional who will act as the central interface between research and administrative departments and take responsibility for the financial management of our third-party funded projects. The position is classified according to EG11 TV-AVH and is to be filled as soon as possible.
Your mission
With your keen sense for numbers and processes, you will strategically support the research areas, keep complex funding requirements firmly in view, and work together with the service units to further develop efficient structures.
- Independent management and oversight of national and international third-party funded projects from the application phase to final accounting, including budget planning, controlling, and compliance with all relevant funding and legal requirements.
- Advising project and research area leaders on budgeting, fund utilization, personnel and resource planning, as well as reviewing funding conditions and contracts.
- Preparation of financial overviews, forecasts, and reports; communication with funding agencies and project sponsors.
- Central point of contact for research area leaders regarding major administrative requests (e.g., job postings) and subsequent coordination of the relevant service processes (HR, Finance, IT, Procurement, Event Management).
- Support in reporting, as well as monitoring and preparation of key figures to steer the research areas.
- Participation in the optimization of organizational processes.
Your profile
- Completed university degree (e.g., Business Administration, Public Administration, Social Sciences, or Political Science) or an equivalent qualification; alternatively, equivalent experience in third-party funding and financial management.
- Solid knowledge of budget, grant, and procurement law, as well as experience dealing with public funding agencies and grants (e.g., DFG, BMFTR, other federal ministries).
- Ideally, experience in applying for and managing EU-funded projects (Horizon, ERC, etc.).
- Excellent analytical skills, strong organizational talent, and an independent, service-oriented way of working.
- Strong communication and advisory skills, enjoyment of cross-functional work, and very good German and English language skills.
- Team spirit, flexibility, and a proactive work style.
