Climate Security and Climate Futures

Whether at European or global level, extreme weather events and climate risks are increasingly becoming part of everyday life. Against this backdrop, researchers at the IFSH are investigating which political and technological solutions are possible for adapting to this new, dynamic climate reality. This also raises the question of how society envisages a future adapted to climate change, and what security and socio-political challenges and risks this entails. The focus is, amongst other things, on the security and normative aspects of ‘extreme’ adaptation mechanisms, such as resettlement due to rising sea levels. Research is also being conducted into the link between the consequences of climate change and violent conflicts, as well as the effects of increasing global warming on human mobility. IFSH researchers are also examining the security policy implications of so-called climate engineering technologies – that is, large-scale and risky interventions in the climate system.
